Cubs Trade: SP AJ Puk (OAK) 3B Jake Burger (CHW) OF Nick Schnell (TB) 2B Nick Solak (TB)
Twins Trade: C Willson Contreras $300,000 2021 RP Tyler Duffey $300,000 2020 2B Dilson Herrera N/A 2020
The Twins agree.
With Ramos on board as C, Contreras was a sort of luxury. Including him to acquire top prospects such as Burger and Puk add significant depth to our system. They do come with injury risk, but all prospects have risk. Schnell has great potential and Solak has proven he can hit at every level he has played at. Duffey and Herrera are simply depth pieces that the Cubs need and I could afford to trade.
Cubs to agree.

Cubs Approve/confirm The obvious draw here for me is getting Contreras back especially with only having an aging C in Lucroy. (Can’t believe he was traded and approved to begin with). Hopefully Duffey lands on the major league roster and like Twins said provide me some depth closer to the majors. Prospects are good but injuries and time will tell.

To MIN:
AJ Puk SP OAK $- ( #42 on MLB's top 100 prospects, and #2 A's prospect ) Jake Burger CWS 3B $- ( #13 White Sox's prospect, per MLB ) Nick Schnell TB OF $- ( #11 TB Ray's prospect, per MLB ) Nick Solak 2B TB ( #16 TB Ray's prospect, per MLB ) To CHC: Willson Contreras C CHC $300,000.00 2021 ( 26 year old Cub's catcher ) Tyler Duffey P MIN $300,000.00 2020 ( low-leverage bullpen pitcher for MIN ) Dilson Herrera 2B NYM $- 2020 ( just hanging around )
Chicago obtains another real Cubs player, in 26 year old Contreras (locked up through 2021). Minnesota obtains a coveted A's pitching prospect, A.J. Puk.

I love WC but this seems like A LOT to give up for him, a RP and a back-up INFer. I have to think about this more before I vote.

Where were you when he was being traded away? Lol. Of course the price will be more to get him back.

You are a new GM and we (TAB) will protect the team if we must. You are trading 4 prospects for a starting catcher, a very low leverage RP (who had 2 HLD and a 7+ ERA last year) and a back-up INFer. Yes that will cause me to take a pause and see if I am comfortable approving such a deal.

And just to clarify Lucroy was signed as as FREE AGENT he was not acq via a trade. Its really good to review the history of a team. bigs.freeforums.net/thread/2162/jon-lucroy-won-2019-cubs

I was referring to Contreras. But I am doing my best to get up to speed with all of the previous moves made by the Cubs.

Here is my main issue with this deal.
Tyler Duffey has minimal value.
Dilson Herrera has no value.

I think the Cubs are giving up too much value here to justify me approving it. The only player that the Cubs are getting of any great value is Willson Contreras. Duffey has minimal value and Herrera has zero value. Meanwhile the Cubs give up 4 prospects.
I think for a new GM they need to keep in mind VALUE especially as it comes to prospects. Giving them up for players with minimal or no value is not a good long-term strategy.
This might still be approved I just personally could not justify it for a new GM at this time. Its nothing personally against you at all Sully we all will have this happen to us.

I should have expanded on my reasoning for approval - Contreras is a proven MLB player, at a weak overall talent position. - Contreras is locked up @ $300,000, through 2021. - A.J. Puk is the obvious gem, going to Minnesota. - None of the other 3 minor-leaguers rank in their teams top 10 prospect's list, per MLB.com (although Solak's treading water status, is baffling). - None of the players going to MIN, are proven talent - at the major-league level. - Chicago's desire to obtain real life Cub's players, will cost a slight premium.

Also remember:
Puk has yet to pitch following TJ surgery Burger has ruptured his Achilles tendon and then re-ruptured it while rehabbing and is still attempting to re-hab. None of these prospects are sure things. Contreras is signed through 2021 on a cheap contract. Catchers are a premium position in fantasy baseball.

This one is a real doozy for evaluation and I can see both sides. Despite the injury concerns for Puk and Burger, they are both still top 100 prospects and Schnell+Solak are better than throw ins. If Puk succeeds, his future value is a SP1 that is controlled on a rookie contract perhaps even in late 2019. Thats 3 first round picks (and one 2nd) for a catcher coming off a .249/.339/.390 season? I get that Catcher is thin but I also don't get the idea that the Cubs need to amass real life Cubs at a premium.
That said, the Twins and Cubs have both expressed a willingness to do this trade and in the end I probably give more leeway to the GMs preference. Even though Marlins is 100% correct, and there is no universe in which I would do this trade from the Cubs perspective, there's too much here to straight up veto.
A reluctant Approval #2.

Approve #3, I have Puk in a few leagues and I am not sure he will make it based on injuries. I hope he does but the GEM of the trade is not as bright as he was when drafted.

Not that it matters at this point but I also would have vetoed this trade. Minnesota is getting a steal in this trade. Two top 100 prospects for a Catcher who hit .250 with 50 RBI's last year. Sure this is better than your average catcher, but not by enough to warrant this deal. You can like him all you want but this is nothing compared to the upside of Puk and Burger.
